First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the extremities, the cloth bright and fresh. The closed text block is lightly toned with a touch of spotting to the top edge. The contents, with a little creasing, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper, that has several short closed tears and scuffs (with associated creasing), and heavy fading to the red lettering on the spine. Not price-clipped (£2.10 / 42s net to the front flap).
Inscribed by the author in blue ink to the front free endpaper "To dear Cousin Caroline / with much love / from / Cousin Christopher / 8th October 1969 / (after hearing the / B-minor Mass)". The journalist, and 'Private Eye' founder's first book. A highly critical analysis of the role played by fantasy in the political and social life of two decades, starting with the Angry Young Men of the 1950's through to the phenomenon of "swinging London".
