First edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. With ten black and white illustrations. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, lightly rubbed to the extremities, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with lightly pencilled marginalia by previous owner Dr Richard Rowland to page 233, are otherwise clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper, which has just a small stain to the underside of the head of the spine (not visible to the printed side) and a small nick to the rear panel. Not price-clipped (£48.00 on a small bookseller's label pasted to the lower rear panel).

From the library of (and with pencilled marginalia of) Dr Richard Rowland, editor and author on the Renaissance and classical mythology, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York. A collection of essays on Sophocles presented to former Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford University, Sir Hugh Lloyd Jones (1922-2009), in September 1997 by a group of his friends, former pupils and scholars in celebration of his seventy-fifth birthday.
