First edition, first printing. Publisher's original olive cloth with gilt titles on green to the spine and a gilt emblem to the upper board, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with colour and black and white reproductions of paintings, letters, and musical scores. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents, with light spotting to the top edge of the text block, are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owner's marks. Complete with the lightly nicked and edge-worn original dustwrapper which has been price-clipped to the lower front flap.

Chronologically volume three in the author's five volume magnum opus.
