GROUPIE

First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, with a little rubbing and bumping to the spine tips, the cloth just a little toned to the extremities. The contents, with the unavoidable toning of the text block due to the poor quality paper stock used in production, are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the bright, lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper, that has a couple of short closed tears with associated creasing. Not price-clipped (25s to the front flap).

Inscribed by the author Jenny Fabian in pink ink on the half-title 'To Aynsley - / A short story that / may never get / written - / Love, Jenny'. The recipient is drummer Aynsley Dunbar, who over a career lasting 60 years, worked with rock and roll legends such as Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Journey, Whitesnake, and Sammy Hagar, to name but a few. As a member of Journey, Dunbar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. A thinly fictionalised chronicle of Jenny Fabian's adventures in the hedonistic underground music culture of the sixties in which she introduces the reader to a variety of characters from the rock scene describing the clubs, art galleries, drugs and uninhibited sex. On first publication the novel caused somewhat of a furore and quickly achieved cult status. Not only it was the first detailed insight into the groupie phenomenon and the world of sex, drugs and Rock n' Roll, but it was also the first time the quintessential sixties slang was used in English literature. As Jonathon Green writes in the preface to the 1997 re-issue: ""Groupie" gets 22 citations in the Oxford English Dictionary from "downer" to "trippy" and "spliff" to "uptight", a mini-lexicon of Sixties-speak" (p.iv).
