AN APOLOGY FOR THE REVIVAL OF CHRISTIAN ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND

First edition, first printing. Contemporary half calf and marbled paper covered boards, ruled in blind and with titles and simple decoration in gilt to the spine. Quarto. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. Illustrated with a frontispiece and nine further full page plates. One page of publisher's adverts. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing and bumping to the corners, the calf a little rubbed. The contents, with the ownership signature of Robert Williams to the upper margin of the half title a little spotting and toning to the prelims and plate margins, are otherwise clean throughout.

A key text of the Gothic Revival, combining architectural criticism, religious argument, and visual comparison to advocate the restoration of medieval Christian principles in English architecture.
