THE HISTORY OF JAVA

First edition thus. Two volumes. Large 4to. Publisher's original green cloth with titles in gilt to the spine, in original slipcase with printed paper title label. Illustrated with 10 colour plates, numerous black and white plates and a large folding map. A near fine set, the bindings square and tight. The contents with the slightest hint of foxing to the textblock edge are otherwise clean and crisp throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. The plates remain clean and bright and the folding map is in perfect condition, free from any damage. The slipcase with a couple of splits is otherwise in good order and structurally sound. A superb set.

The first 'Oxford in Asia Historical Reprints' edition of Raffles' famous work describing the history of Java from ancient times as well as its geography, flora, and fauna in extensive detail. As Bastin writes in the introduction "in the development of Indonesian studies... it would seem impossible to exaggerate its importance... even those Dutch critics who have found little to praise in his administrations of Java have recognised its merits... today it stands as one of the classics of South-East Asian historiography" (p.9). The present volume forms a fine facsimile reproduction of the 1817 original.
