First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author to Fanny Roscol, along with an additional original ink drawing of a donkey. Large format, 42cm x 31.5cm. Publisher's original colour pictorial card covers. Illustrated by the author with 20 superb Art Deco pochoir colour plates (19 mounted) and 70 in-text illustrations (one full page). A very good copy, the binding secure with the card spine panel lacking, loss to the spine ends, creasing/crinkling to the lower cover, wear to the extremities and a few marks to the covers. The contents with an additional contemporary ink gift inscription (also to Fanny Roscol, from Pierre Muller), a few small tears to the edges and a discreet tape repair to the front free endpaper, the half title coming a little loose, two creases to one plate and a 1cm tear to the foot of another, are otherwise in good order and clean throughout. The pochoir plates remain bold and bright. A nice, unsophisticated example.
Inscribed by the author in black ink to the half title page: "A Mademoiselle Fanny Roscol / Décembre 1911 / André Hellé". The charming accompanying original ink drawing by Hellé depicting a donkey is similar in style to the pochoir donkey illustrated later in the volume. The author's scarce first book. A joyful example of early French Art Deco children's book design.
