THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE

Early printing of the 1872 first edition. Inscribed by the author. Publisher's original red cloth with illustrations and triple ruled borders in gilt to the upper and lower boards, titles in gilt to the spine. Illustrated throughout by John Tenniel. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, refurbished at the upper joint. The cloth is a little darkened and lightly marked with some dulling of the gilt to the spine. The contents, including the black coated endpapers and tissue guard to the frontispiece remain clean throughout with only the occasional light spot or finger mark to the margins. An attractive, well-provenanced signed copy of this classic of children's literature.

Inscribed by Lewis Carroll in purple ink on the half title "Wykeham Price, / from the author / [flourish] Aug. 1887". Provenance: From the library of novelist, philanthropist and discerning collector of art, rare books and manuscripts Sir Hugh Walpole (1884-1941), with his ownership signature and inscription "Brackenburn / 1940" in blue ink at the bottom of the half title. In 1932 Walpole wrote the preface for Macmillan's 'Centenary Edition' of Alice's Adventures In Wonderland, which was published to assist the Lewis Carroll Memorial Fund to establish a Children's Ward at St. Mary's Hospital, in memory of the author.
