First edition. Publisher's original brick red cloth with gilt titles and Christopher Robin and Pooh illustration to the spine, in the E. H. Shepard illustrated dustwrapper. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrated throughout with eight colour plates and 289 black and white in-text line drawings by E. H. Shepard throughout. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some rubbing, bumping to the extremities, the cloth a little mottled to the upper board is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents, with a small light blue bookseller's label to the front pastedown, are clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. The text block edge is a little toned and spotted. Complete with the rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper, that has several short closed tears with associated creasing, a small chip to the upper front flap fold, and some toning and a few marks to the spine and edges. Not price-clipped (21s net to the lower front flap).
The first collected edition of A. A. Milne's two volumes of verse, here with all of the original line drawings of the 1924 and 1927 first editions and to which E. H. Shepard has drawn eight new full page illustrations in colour. 'When We Were Young' includes 'Teddy Bear' in which reader's are introduced to 'Mr Edward Bear', who became better known as Winnie the Pooh.
