First edition, first printing. Publisher's original blueish green cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Quentin Blake illustrated dustwrapper. Illustrated with ink wash drawings by Quentin Blake throughout. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh, with just a little bumping to the spine tips. The contents, with a touch of toning to the closed text block, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very lightly creased dustwrapper that is without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped (£6.50 net to the lower front flap). A very attractive example.
Winner of the 1983 Whitbread Prize for Children's Book of the Year and the subject of two film adaptations; the first, a Jim Henson production in 1990 directed by Nicolas Roeg, starring Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson; the second in 2020 directed by Robert Zemeckis starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci and Kristin Chenoweth.
