First UK edition. Bound by Stephen Conway in full tan leather with titles in black to the upper board and spine. Top edge gilt. Hand-sewn endbands. The publisher's original oatmeal cloth bound in at the rear. Housed in a bespoke cloth solander case. Publisher's undated 32 page catalogue at the rear starting Gilbert Parker's "Right of Way" and ending "A Drone and a Dreamer by Nelson Lloyd". The binding is in fine condition, the contents with the occasional foxing spot and finger mark to the margins. A beautifully presented example of Wells' classic and hugely influential work of science-fiction.
The basis of numerous film, television and comic adaptations. Whilst the American edition narrowly precedes, the publication was riddled with errors, this first UK edition therefore is preferred and accepted as the first appearance of the definitive text.
