First edition, second state. Export issue (printed by William Clowes and Sons). Publisher's original dark blue boards with gilt titles and decoration to the spine, in dustwrapper. With fold-out map to the rear. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh, with some bumping to the spine tips and extremities. The contents are clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. The map is in fine condition. Complete with the very lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper, that has a short closed tear to the lower front front flap fold, and a touch of fading to the spine. Unpriced to the front flap (for export).
Tolkien's creation story and Norse-style epic history of the world in which The Lord of the Rings is set. Compiled and edited by his son, Christopher. The second state of the first edition is notable for its lack of dark blue top-stain and blue-white headbands, and for correcting a misprint in the index, by de-italicising the 'and' between the titles of 'Lord of Waters' and 'King of the Sea' in the 'Ulmo' entry on page 352.
