First edition, first printing. Original illustrated paper-covered board with a green cloth spine. Illustrated throughout in colour by Ernest Shepard. A very good copy, the binding firm with wear to the edges and corners, the boards a little rubbed and dusty. There is light spotting to the prelims and fingermarks to the margins, the contents are otherwise clean and without stamps or inscriptions.
A collection of cautionary tales told in rhyming verse in which naughty children meet misfortune, fantastically illustrated by Ernest Shepard. The tales, which were first serialised in Punch magazine, imitate the 1845 German children's book 'Der Struwwelpeter', written by the psychiatrist Heinrich Hoffman.
