Blaylock and illustrator Ferret in blue and black ink, respectively, on the rear panel of the supplementary pamphlet, and by William Ashbless in black ink on the rear endpaper. Ashbless is the pseudonym for the collaborative writing of James P Blaylock and science fiction author Tim Powers, while Ferret is one of several pseudonyms used by science fiction book illustrator and author Timothy MacNamara. 'The Digging Leviathan' (1984) is the eponymous first novel in the series, set in a modern Los Angeles atop a giant underground sea.
