First edition, first printing. Publisher's original blue cloth with silver titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with the odd isolated foxing spot to a couple of page magins, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the bright and clean, lightly rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper that has just one small chip at the top of the rear spine fold. Not price-clipped (12/6 net to to the lower front flap). An attractive example, seldom encountered as such.
Monsarrat's bestselling war novel formed the basis for the 1953 Charles Frend directed film starring Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, Denholm Elliott, Stanley Baker, Liam Redmond, Virginia McKenna and Moira Lister, for which Eric Ambler wrote the screenplay.
