First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Joan Ogden illustrated dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth clean and bright. The contents, with a bookplate to the front pastedown and light spotting to the top edge of the closed text block, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly creased price-clipped dustwrapper, which is a little faded to the spine, with a patch of sticker residue to the front flap and is otherwise without loss or tears.

The author's second novel, which was shortlisted for the 1978 Booker Prize. It was adapted into a film in 2017 directed by Isabel Coixet and starring Emily Mortimer and Bill Nighy.
