First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Original blue cloth with silver decorations and lettering to front, back and spine, in dustwrapper. A very fine copy, tight and square, without marks or blemishes; vivid blue endpapers and a bound-in emerald-green ribbon bookmark. Complete with the near fine dustwrapper, designed and illustrated by the author, which is immaculate except for a one-inch (at its widest point) crease to the edge of the inner flap. Not price-clipped and correctly priced (15.99 net) to the front flap. A lovely copy.

Signed by the author, without dedication, across the top of the front free endpaper. The boards are decorated, front and back, with a diagonal lattice design (complete with a spider suspended from the bottom) surrounding a pine tree stump sprouting one branch bearing leaves, completed by the caption, "TRY AGAIN". The whole volume is characteristically filled with a wealth of typographic and illustrative curiosities. (Moores A4a).
