The first novel in the Latro trilogy, which won the 1987 Locus Award for best fantasy novel, and was nominated for a Nebula and World Fantasy Award in the same year. It was followed by Soldier of Arete (1989) and Soldier of Sidon (2006). The UK edition precedes the American first edition by several weeks.
