First edition, first printing. Original pictorial paper-covered boards. Illustrated with line drawings by Pauline Baynes throughout. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm with just a touch of rubbing at the extremities. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps.

Whilst by no means scarce in first edition, the fragile nature of the binding on the first edition means that most copies suffer from heavy wear and scuffing. In later printings the binding colour was changed to incorporate a white spine and panel edges with a heavier lamination to prevent the wear issues of the first. (Hammond & Anderson A9a).
