First edition, first printing. Two volumes. Publisher's original navy blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine and upper boards. From the personal library of Professor Glen Schaefer, later bequeathed to the library of Cranfield University.A very good set, the bindings square and firm with a little bumping at the spine tips. The cloth, with small paper labels removed at the bottom of the spine is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents, with a bookplate marking the donation affixed to front pastedown, in addition two circular library inkstamps and barcode label to the front endpapers of each volume are otherwise clean throughout. There is a magnetic label affixed to rear pastedown.Scarce in first edition.

Among the first important works in parapsychology, this book explores the concept of 'thought transfer' or telepathy from many angles, including a theory that the reported phenomena of apparitions is in fact spontaneous thought transfer at the point of death, as well as sections on dreams and hallucinations, and was published to great, though not universal, controversy throughout the scientific community. The three contributors were all members of The Society for Psychical Research and were each influential, though also heavily criticised, within of the convergence of the fields of psychology and the paranormal.
