First UK edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a touch of bumping to the bottom edge of the boards, the cloth with a small patch of fading to the top of the spine is othwerwise bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very good, rubbed and nicked dustwrapper, which has several short closed tears (one secured with a single piece of tape to the underside), some toning and a splash mark to the rear panel, and a little chipping at the head of the slightly faded spine. The front flap has been clipped and re-priced by the publisher (3/6 net).
Signed by Roald Dahl in black ink on the front endpaper. The author's second book, his first for adults, a short story collection based on his experiences in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. 'Beware of the Dog', the fourth story in this compilation, was later adapted into the 1964 George Seaton film '36 Hours', starring James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, and Rod Taylor.
