First edition, first printing. Signed by the author. Publisher's original orange cloth with black titles to the spine, in the Michael Gibbon illustrated dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding firm with a very slight lean to the spine and rubbing at the extremities. The contents, with spotting to the closed text-block edge and occasionally the margins, and some offsetting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean and without previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the good, rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper that has has several tears and is chipped with loss at the head of the spine. Not price-clipped (7/6 on the front flap).
Signed by Elisabeth Kyle in black ink on the front free endpaper. The author's second novel, a story of the rise and fall in fortune of the inhabitants of a country house across the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Elisabeth Kyle (pseudonym of Agnes Mary Robertson Dunlop, 1901-1982) was a prolific Scottish writer and journalist who wrote novels novels for adults, children's fiction, and books about historical figures.
