First edition, first printing. Original grey cloth with titles and decorations in gilt and navy to the spine and upper board. Top edge navy. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrated throughout with tissue guarded colour illustration plates of manor houses, along with in-text decorations and illustrations in black and yellow by Cecil Aldin. A very good copy, the binding firm, the boards very slightly bowed, the cloth toned to the spine and extremities, a little fraying to the spine tips, and two small marks to the lower board. The contents, with a small bookseller's label to the front pastedown and a neat ownership inscription to the half title, are otherwise clean and bright throughout.
