LORD OF THE TREES

First UK edition, first printing. Publisher's original burgundy cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Julie Smith illustrated dustwrapper. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents are clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. The text block is very lightly toned to the top edge. Complete with lightly creased dustwrapper, which is a little faded to the spine and otherwise without loss or tears. Not price-clipped (£6.95 to the lower front flap).

One of two sequels to 'A Feast Unknown' (1969) in prolific science-fiction author Philip José Farmer's 'Secrets of the Nin'e series, 'Lord of Trees' was first published in 1970 as a paperback original in an Ace Double. The novel centres on Lord Grandith, a clear pastiche of Tarzan, while its companion sequel, 'The Mad Goblin', is told from the perspective of Doc Caliban, a send-up of pulp-fiction icon Doc Savage. Named a Grand Master of Science Fiction in 2001, Farmer is best known for his 'Riverworld' and 'World of Tiers' series and remains a groundbreaking figure in the genre, particularly for being one of the first science-fiction writers to openly explore sexuality, beginning with his debut novel 'The Lovers' (1952).
