First edition, first printing. Inscribed by two of the three authors. Original blue cloth with gold decorations and lettering to front, back and spine, in dustwrapper. A fine copy, tight and square, without marks or blemishes; emerald green endpapers. Complete with the equally fine dustwrapper, designed by Alasdair Gray. Not price-clipped and correctly priced (£8.95 net) to the front flap. An immaculate copy.
Inscribed "TO IAN from Alasdair 20.2.1989 Riverside Studios" to the front free endpaper, this copy is also inscribed by Gray and James Kelman to the pages bearing Gray's pen and ink portraits that precede their respective stories. The Agnes Owens page is unsigned. The dark blue boards are decorated with a design matching the jacket of interlocking rectangles and diamonds framing the centrally placed publisher's logo, itself surrounded by small stars. Gray, Kelman and Owens were part of a group of writers formed around the weekly gatherings organised by the critic Philip Hobsbaum (documented in the Postscript of "Lean Tales"). (Moores A3a)
