First combined edition. Two volumes in one, as issued. Publisher's original burgundy cloth with gilt titles to the spine. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm with minor bumping at the spine tips, the cloth and gilt remains bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. A superb example of a scarce title.
The first edition of J. R. R. Tolkien's first book, A Middle English Vocabulary was printed in an edition of 2000 copies, of which some were bound separately in wrappers and some, as here, with Kenneth Sisam's Fourteenth Century Verse and Prose. Both books are bound with a separate title page; that of Sisam is in the second state for this issue dated 1923 (as recorded by Hammond in the notes of B3), Tolkien correctly dated 1922.
