The second volume in former Prime Minister Winston Churchill's Post-War Speeches edited by his son Randolph S. Churchill. A comprehensive compilation of 52 speeches delivered by Churchill in his role as Leader of His Majesty's Opposition during the years 1947 and 48 and spanning many prevalent topics of the time, including Palestine, India, Burmese Independence, and domestic political matters such as national service and the iron and steel industries. The title, 'Europe Unite', is derived from the overarching theme of Churchill's speech given at The Hague on 7th May 1948, which can be read from pp. 310-17 of this volume. A united Europe was a strong and enduring belief of Churchill's, and he frequently used his political platform to call for other nation leaders to join together under a common purpose and rebuild after the devastation wrought by the Second World War (Churchill Archive, 2025). His speech at The Congress of Europe at The Hague praised the response of many European countries to his earlier appeal in Zurich in 1946, and emphasised the need for continued progress without jealousies or rivalries "No one can suppose that Europe can be united on any party or sectional basis, any more than that any one nation can assert an overweening predominance. It must be all for all". (Cohen A246.1; Woods A128a)
