ELEMENTS OF THE CRITICAL PHILOSOPHY. Containing a Concise Account of its Origin and Tendency; A view of all the works published by its founder, Professor Immanuel Kant; and a glossary for an explanation of terms and phrases. To which are added: Three Philological Essays; chiefly translated from the German of John Christopher Adelung; Aulic counsellor and first librarian to the elector of Saxony.

First edition. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked in the mid-twentieth century, the spine with two raised bands either side of the gilt titled, red morocco label of the earlier binding. Portrait frontispiece of Immanuel Kant. Binder's label of Edward Baker to the bottom edge of the front pastedown. A near very good copy, the binding square and firm with some wear to the board edges. The contents, somewhat toned and spotted to the endpapers and prelims, with a couple of short closed tears at the corners of pages 45-48, and some pencilled marginalia by an unidentified previous owner, are otherwise clean throughout.

One of the earliest and most important introductions to Immanuel Kant's philosophy in English, representing a crucial early effort to make Kantian thought accessible to Anglophone readers, following the 1796 lectures of F. A. Nitsch. Copies retaining the portrait frontispiece are rarely encountered on the market.
