First Canadian edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles and decoration to the spine. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth lightly rubbed and marked with some fraying at the spine tips and board edges. The contents, spotted throughout are without inscriptions or stamps. Publisher's catalogue at the rear dated July 1913. The Canadian first edition is scarce.

Conrad's biggest commercial success upon publication and the most bibliographically complex of his first editions. The Canadian issue, one of 315 copies bound from of the total of 3,000 first edition sheets (1,935 were for the UK market and 750 were for the colonial issue) was arguably the first commercially available printing preceding the delayed January 1914 UK publication due to a binder's strike and reprinting and replacement of the title pages. The earliest recorded example of this issue was deposited with the Montreal Public Library in October 1913.
