First edition thus. Collector's edition. Full navy blue leather with three raised bands to the spine, gilt titles, decorations and illustrations to the spine and boards. Illustrated throughout, with a full page colour frontispiece and black and white chapter illustrations by Vincent Difate. All edges gilt. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps.

The novel, inspired by Clarke's 1951 short story "The Sentinel" and written concurrently with the screenplay by Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick, was first published shortly after the release of Kubrick's 1968 multi-award winning film adaptation.
