THE ZINCALI: Or, an Account of the Gypsies of Spain. With an Original Collection of Their Songs and Poetry, and a Copious Dictionary of Their Language.

Second edition. Two volumes. Publisher's original dark green cloth with black titles on paper label to the spine and triple ruled in blind to the boards. Publisher's advert (torn to one corner) tipped in at the front endpaper of volume I. A very good set, the bindings square, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities of both volumes and a few nicks to the spine ends of volume II. The cloth, with a surface split along the upper spine fold of volume I, is uniformly faded to the spine of both volumes, the labels darkened and a little chipped at the edges. The contents, with a contemporary ownership name and date to the front free endpaper are lightly toned otherwise clean throughout. A few pages uncut, a couple of others roughly cut (not affecting the text). An attractive example in entirely unsophisticated condition. The second volume presents Romani poetry in parallel translation, in addition to a dictionary of the Romani language.

First published in 1841, this second edition of 750 sets was published in March 1843, at the same time as the third edition of 'The Bible in Spain'. The second edition, on the most part was "typographically identical to the first", but contained a new preface by Burrow and passages "that might have been deemed gratuitously offensive" were deleted.
