THE TRAVELS AND OBSERVATIONS OF HAREACH, THE WANDERING JEW. Comprehending a View of the Most Distinguished Events in the History of Mankind Since the Destruction of Jerusalem by Titus. With a Description of the Manners, Customs, and Remarkable Monuments of the Most Celebrated Nations. Interspersed with Anecdotes of Eminent Men of Different Periods.

Second edition, "revised and improved, with many valuable additions". Contemporary full calf. Spine ruled in gilt with black morocco title label lettered in gilt. Illustrated with 7 engravings and 2 folding maps. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little minor cracking and loss to the rear outer hinge and a little rubbing to the extremities. The contents with a neat contemporary previous owner's name in ink to the front free endpaper, very small loss to the blank tip of the bottom corner of the title page and a little occassional foxing are otherwise clean throughout. The engravings and maps remain fresh and free from damage. An excellent example.

An uncommon historical travel book by John Galt (1779-1839), the Scottish novelist, entrepreneur, and political and social commentator. Galt indicates his authorship at the end of the work, using the first letters of the last 26 sentences of the conclusion to spell out: "THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN BY JOHN GALT". Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone.
