CLARISSA, Or, The History of a Young Lady. Comprehending the Most Important Concerns of Private Life. And Particularly Shewing the Distresses that May Attend the Misconduct Both of Parents and Children In Relation to Marriage.

First Tinsley Brothers edition. Three volumes. Seemingly a variant publisher's binding of floral patterned cloth with gilt titles to the spines. Two pages of publisher's adverts at the rear of volume III. A very good set, the bindings square and firm, with rubbing, chips and tears to the spine tips, the cloth split at the head of the spine of volume I. The gilt remains uniformly bright to the somewhat toned spines. The inner hinges in volumes 1 and II are cracked but holding. The contents, with some toning and the odd foxing spot to the margins are otherwise clean throughout. A few pages carelessly opened with resulting nicks and chips to the margins, several pages unopened in volume III. A scarce and attractive edition of Samuel Richardson's epistolary masterpiece, most unusual in this decorative publisher's cloth.

Edited for a Victorian audience by Eneas Sweet Dallas. Volume I honours the 1748 first edition by including a facsimile of the original title page following the introduction. This edition is not in Sadleir or Wolff.
