THE FAITHFUL. A Tragedy in Three Acts.

First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author. With an ALS from Constance Masefield. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the upper board and spine. Without the dustwrapper. Illustrated endpapers. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm with just a little rubbing at the extremities. The cloth and gilt remains bright and fresh. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' marks.

Inscribed by the author in black ink on the front free endpaper "from / John Masefield / August 1915 / The days that make us happy / make us wise" underneath which he has drawn a sail boat. Loosely laid in is a ALS dated 21 Sept [1915] from the author's wife (and dedicatee of this volume) reading in part "my husband is in the Dardenelles in charge of a motor ambulance boat. The pressing need for more such boats to convey the wounded from Gallipoli to hospital ships, or rather from mine sweepers to hospital ships made him abandon the hospital in France and use the money we had collected (with the consent of the institutions) for the purchase of equipment of boats..."
