First edition. Publisher's original burgundy cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Mary Howard designed dustwrapper. With 14 tables, graphs, and line-drawn diagrams in black throughout. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth bright and fresh, with some rubbing to the spine tips and extremities. The contents, with just a little toning to the closed text block, are otherwise clean throughout, and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete in the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper, which has a small red bookseller's label fixed to the underside of the rear panel, a touch of fading to the spine, and is otherwise without loss or tears. Not price-clipped.
'From the battle of Maldon in 991 during the reign of Ĉethelred (the Unready), England was invaded by Scandinavian armies of increasing size and ferocity. Swein Forkbeard, king of Denmark, played a significant part in these invasions, which culminated in the domination of England and the long reign of his son, Cnut.' (publisher's blurb)
