First edition. Contemporary quarter calf with marbled paper covered boards and gilt titles and decorations to the spine. Marbled endpapers. A luxury magazine containing 12 beautiful pochoir plates by Barbier, as well as a couple of vignettes, a calendar, and the bound-in original wrappers. With a foreword (in French) by the flamboyant actress Cécile Sorel, who is lavishly depicted in one of the illustrations. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm, just a little rubbed to the extremities. The contents, with the remnants of a small oval label to the front free endpaper, the odd tiny spot here and there, and some faint offsetting to the facing pages of some of the plates, are otherwise clean and bright throughout and without stamps or inscriptions. A lovely copy of a wonderful publication.
The third issue of the quintessentially Art Deco French illustrator George Barbier's yearly luxury periodical, which ran from 1922-1926. Falbalas et Fanfreluches ("ruffles and frills") gives a fantastical view of 1920s fashion, showing characters and costumes from throughout history and around the world alongside equally opulent contemporary scenes, conjuring up the playful, imaginative attitude and atmosphere of the decade's style.
