First edition thus. Handsome contemporary binding by Zaehnsdorf of full dark-green morocco. The spine with five raised bands and titles in gilt. Elaborate gilt inner dentelles and marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Silk ribbon page marker bound in. Illustrated throughout with black and white drawings by Hugh Thomson. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square, firm and bright, the corners sharp, with just a couple of very minor scratches to the boards. The contents remain wonderfully clean and crisp throughout and are free from any previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. A superb copy.

The first edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's classic novel to be illustrated by Hugh Thomson, splendidly bound by Zaehnsdorf. Notably, Thomson's drawings for this work served to inaugurate what became known as the "Cranford School" of illustration, which abandoned the 1890s style of Beardsley for the delicacy of an eighteenth-century mode.
