First Arthur Rackham illustrated edition. Publisher's original green cloth with titles and illustration in black to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated endpapers and 12 full page colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations throughout by Arthur Rackham. An excellent near fine copy, the binding firm and cloth bright, the contents with a little toning to the text block edge are otherwise clean and bright and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the good rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that is chipped with a little loss at the head of the somewhat toned spine, less so to rear panel. There is a clean split the length of the upper spine fold that closes entirely once the dustwrapper is placed in its removable protective sleeve.
This first Rackham edition of Dickens A Christmas Carol whilst correctly dated 'London: William Heinemann 1915' and conforming entirely with the Riall bibliography (p.124-125), is in the generally accepted later state green cloth (rather than purple and gilt) with the frontispiece illustration integral (rather than tipped in on green card).
