First edition. The binder's retained copy. Publisher's original printed paper boards and yellow cloth spine, with black titling pasted to the spine, in the light grey card and yellow cloth slipcase. Illustrated throughout with 42 black and white engravings and 5 colour, with 3 tipped in plates and 4 fold outs. A fine copy, the boards bright, the contents clean and free from inscriptions or stamps, complete with the fine slipcase. All plates and fold outs are in fine condition.

Issued in a limited edition of 290 'C' copies, this example being unnumbered (as it is the binder's retained copy). Published in 2020 to celebrate the Centenary of the Society of Wood Engravers. Compiled by Nigel Hamway, who asked nineteen engravers to create a new work to go alongside an illustration or engraving, by a major artistic influence, with a brief introduction written by each engraver about why their influence is important to them.. 'Their brief essays on these, taken together, shine a light on the history wood engraving in the twentieth century and show the handing on of a craft (intro)'. Includes works by leading 20th Century engravers, such as Gertrude Hermes, Geoffrey Wales, John Nash, Monica Poole, John Farleigh etc. A beautifully produced example of past and present engraving.
