First edition, first printing. The publisher's retained copy. Original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the contents, with the publisher's "Archive Copy" stamp to the title page, a numerical note in blue ink to the front free endpaper and a small ink stain to the text block top edge, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly spine toned dustwrapper which has the publisher's "File Copy" stamp to the upper pane, a spot and a little dustiness to the spine, a light stain and a publisher's pencil note to the front panel, and a small "44" in red ink to the rear panel.

This biography of the Irish politician (who would go on to become the president of Ireland from 1959 1973) was written by Michael Joseph MacManus, a writer, humorist, and bibliophile. Macmanus wrote for many Irish journals and newspapers, and became the first literary editor of The Irish Press in 1935. Provenance: From the archive of the publisher Victor Gollancz.
