First edition, first printing. Inscribed by John Vassos. Publisher's original red cloth with titles in gilt to the upper board and spine, block design to the upper board in black and white. Without dustwrapper. Illustrated with 22 full pages plates by John Vassos. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little fraying at the spine tips. The contents are entirely complete and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. There is a finger mark to the bottom of the half title otherwise the pages and plates are clean throughout. Loosely laid in is the publisher's single sheet prospectus printed in black. Scarce in signed state.
Inscribed in black ink on the half title "Lo! To Margaret Taylor / with much admiration / from John Vassos / in New York City Sept 14 / 1933". The Romanian-born American artist and industrial designer John Vassos not only played a major role in promoting the Art Deco aesthetic in advertising and book illustration, but was famous for designing the earliest commercially available television sets and many other notable products and logos of the period. Ultimio is regarded as one of the artist's most significant works.
