THE HOUSE THE MOLES BUILT

First edition, first printing. Original illustrated boards with a tan cloth spine lettered in black. Illustrated with six colour plates and further monochrome drawings printed in navy throughout. A very good copy, the binding firm with a little rubbing and bumping to the edges, the boards slightly bowed. The contents, with a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper, light spotting to the endpapers and occasional fingermarking to the margins, are otherwise clean throughout. There is some exposed webbing to a few internal gutters, the binding remains otherwise firm and sound.

A wonderful children's story about a large mole family that build their own house, written and illustrated by Dorothy Burroughes. After studying at The Slade and Heatherley's Burroughes found commercial success with her popular London Underground posters featuring monkeys in the early 1920s, following which she was able to exhibit her work, illustrate books and magazines and publish her own picture books. From the early 1910s Burroughs was in a relationship with the writer Vere Hutchinson, and she provided dustjacket designs for Hutchinson's five novels. 'The House the Moles Built' is the 9th book to be both written and illustrated by Burroughes.
