An original watercolour and gouache illustration for BB's sequel to the Carnegie Award winning fantasy novel 'The Little Grey Men'. The image, depicting Dodder seated at the riverside, talking with Otter, measures 23.5 x 18cm and is signed lower right. It is in fine condition. Mounted, framed and glazed.
Now classics of children's literature, 'BB' Denys Watkins-Pitchford's two novels of the epic adventures of last four gnomes in Great Britain were published by Eyre and Spottiswoode in 1942 and 1948. The first edition of 'Down the Bright Stream' featured 16 full page colour plates by the author. The present painting is likely a preliminary or alternative illustration to the one titled 'Dodder and friend Otter' which was eventually published as the frontispiece.
