First edition of Edwin Drood, early printing of the first collected edition of The Christmas Books. Handsome nineteenth century tree calf by Mansell, gilt ruled to the upper and lower boards with decorative corner pieces. Five raised bands, gilt decorated compartments and titles on red and black morocco labels to the spine. Gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. The Mystery of Edwin Drood with portrait frontispiece, engraved title page and 12 illustrations by S. L. Fildes. 190pp.; The Christmas Books with illustrations by Landseer, Maclise, Stanfield, F. Stone, Doyle, Leech and Tenniel, half title, 465pp. A very good copy indeed, the binding square and firm with some rubbing to the extremities. The contents with a small 1938 gift inscription to the reverse of the front endpaper are otherwise clean and bright throughout. A very attractive example.
The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.
