First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green pictorial cloth with a mountain scene and titles in white to the upper board and titles in gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece by Hayward Young, 71 black and white photographic plates and 8 maps. A very good copy, the binding firm and bright with a slight lean, a small area of minor bubbling to the spine cloth, a bump to the top corner of the upper board and a little rubbing to the extremities. The contents with tanning to the endpapers and a neat contemporary previous owner's inscription in ink to the front free endpaper are otherwise clean throughout.
