LIVING DANGEROUSLY

First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by the author to Jon Wynne-Tyson. Publisher's original red cloth with titles in silver to the spine, in dustwrapper. ALS from the author to Wynne-Tyson loosely laid in, along with a leaflet advertising another of the author's works and several related press-cuttings. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a minor bump to the head of the spine. The contents with some light spotting to the edges of the textblock and the occasional pencil annotation are otherwise in very good order throughout. Complete with the very good lightly-marked dustwrapper which has some minor crumpling to the spine ends. Not price-clipped (£2.60 net to the front flap).

A work of domestic "applied ecology" by the scientist, nutritionist and early member of the Soil Association, Hilda Cherry Hills (d. 1989), wife of Lawrence Donegan Hills (1911-1991), the horticulturalist, journalist and one of Britain's best-known writers on organic gardening. In the present work Hills provides a guide to overcoming the unnatural dangers of modern life, with chapters on air pollution, tobacco, parenting, alcohol, insecticides, and diet. This copy was presented by Hills to her friend, the publisher and activist for animal rights, vegetarianism and pacifism, Jon Wynne-Tyson (1924-2020).
