First UK edition, first printing. Publisher's inscribed presentation copy. Original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Inscribed by the publisher. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the extremities a little rubbed and the gilt titles slightly faded. The contents, with a previous owner's inscription (a relative, possibly the wife of the recipient), a small pencil note and tape mark to margin of page 422, two small red pencil highlights to the index, and faints spotting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout. No dustwrapper.
