First edition, first printing. Publisher's original course beige cloth with a small illustration in silver to the upper board and titles in silver to the spine, in the Berthold Wolpe illustrated dustwrapper. With line block illustrations by Berthold Wolpe throughout. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little bumping at the spine tips, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with some offsetting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the very good, lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that has a few minor marks and a little toning to the spine and panel edges. Not price-clipped (5s net to the lower front flap). Scarce in the dustwrapper.
An early illustrated work by German émigré typographer, designer and illustrator Berthold Wolpe. Wolpe is best known for his four-decade association with Faber and Faber, for whom he created more than 1,500 book covers and dustwrapper designs.
