First Ukranian edition, first printing. Original pictorial wrappers. A very good copy indeed, the binding firm with small chips to the spine tips. Other than the habitual tanning of the poor quality paper the pages remain clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The fragile nature of this important printing means examples is condition as here have become very scarce in commerce.
This edition, with a preface written by Orwell especially for it, was intended for distribution among Ukrainian refugees. Whilst Fenwick does not give an indication of the print run, it is believed that approximately 2000 copies were distributed before the remainder of the edition was confiscated. The preface "an account of Orwell's early life, his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, his views on Stalinism and the Soviet regime, and his belief in the importance of the Socialist movement" was later translated back into English for inclusion in Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters. [Fenwick A.10 T.25 / p.97 & 98].
