First edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy from the author to the British historian George Shepperson. With a typed and hand written letter From Massa to Shepperson loosely laid in. Original purple cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with a photographic portrait frontispiece and a number of black and white drawings by Vachel Lindsay. A very good copy, the binding square and tight, the contents clean throughout. Complete with the original lightly rubbed, nicked and creased dustwrapper that is faded to the spine and edges. Not price clipped ($10.00 to the top of the front flap).

Inscribed by Ann Massa in purple ink to the front free endpaper "For George Shepperson - / at whose Imperial & American / History Lectures I first / heard the name of / Vachel Lindsay - with / every good wish from / Ann Massa / May 1970". The recipient is George "Sam" Shepperson (1922-2020), British historian, Africanist and William Robertson Professor of Commonwealth and American History at the University of Edinburgh from 1963 until 1986. Ann Massa was a lecturer in American Studies at Nottingham University and Research Fellow at the University of Essex.
